Reflecting on childhood pleasures
7 comments so far
As a new father, I’ve been thinking about my childhood lately and what made it so wonderful. I have countless fond memories of the neighborhood I grew up in, my elementary school, family activities, swimming during the summer, “The Path”, night games with the neighborhood kids, water fights, building forts in backyards…I could go on and on.
One specific thing came to mind though: I always loved it when my dad would make a stop on his way home from work and bring my sister and me Baskin Robbins ice cream.
It wasn’t an expensive thing. It didn’t take a lot of time. But whenever he did it I felt like a million bucks because I knew it meant he was thinking about me while he was away.
This leads me to encourage you to do two things:
1. Think of when you were a kid. What was something that absolutely made your day? I found that in that simple act of reflecting back brought a smile to my face and made me miss my dad a bit (in a good way) as he still lives in Oregon while I’m now in Utah.
Please share your thoughts in the comments!
2. Take whatever it was that made you happy and do it for someone else. Take your kid out for ice cream. Find a basketball court and play H-O-R-S-E. Get outside and play Kick the Can or Capture the Flag. Do something to make someone else feel special.
The result? You’ll providing someone with a happy memory they’ll be able to share, and pass on, to others.
Oh, and if you feel so inclined, jot down those memories from step 1 in a journal or diary.

P.S. Don’t have any, or know any kids? Adults like ice cream too. ;)

Ah, that’s a fabulous idea! It really is a good example of the “livsimpl” concept. I just might take my nephews on a merry-go-round next time I see them.
Merry-go-round! Great one! Thanks for the comment.
Its so good to see that some people are still blogging something original - THANKS.
My dad used to buy me chocolate milk on the way home from work - yum.

atomic al - thanks so much for your comment and kind words.
That mint chocolate chip ice cream …. trips to Baskin Robbins with my allowance when I was a kid …. I loved that!
Thanks for this.
I remember when I was in 6th grade I loved it when my older brother picked me up after school and we’d go down to Albertson’s a buy a soda from the vending machine outside.
From the comments and my own memories, it still seems that life’s simple pleasures are the best!
